An Introduction is in order
Sometimes in life we’re given the oppounirt to say ‘fuck it’ and begin something new. In early 2025, I lost my biggest client and found myself back to square one in a career that, honestly, had been very kind to me - that being - a career in digital marketing.
I had worked for an estate agency for 5 years when i decided i’d have gained enough knowledge to ‘fly the nest’ so to speak with the aim of going freelance. It didn’t quite work out like how i’d have wanted with a little global pandemic hitting just months after I had started. Damn, if i had just stood at my job furlough would be nice right about now.
Instead i become one of these unlucky few who the goveernment cast aside trying tiredlessly to get work when noone was hiring nor would they ever pay out to a new business entity - that wasn’t the conversative way.
Nevertheless, I persuveed and took my business in a new direction. I was always good at Search Engine Optisation - basically getting websites to the top of Google’s serach - and it was with this and a shit tonne of research that i landed on a website that would end up making me a living for over 3 years.
Fast forward to 2023 and Google had had enough of some unsavory people in the scene. It was time for an algatrhmic change and that would spell distaster for my website and my business. Overnight, I had gone from a steady income to it becoming cut entirely. Google surely couldn’t willing destory the livelihoods of most likely millions of people could it? Well it did and that’s a story for another time.
All you need to know if Google singlehandily decided that my website wasn’t good enough any more and the traffic i have worked so hard to build over a 3-4 year period was to go to someone else - Reddit mainly.
Anyhow it was around this time that something else had caught my eye and i was playing around with some new AI Tool called ChatGPT - version 3.5 to be specific. But to me as much as it’s helped my business out personally, like many, it gave a very unsavewry feeling mainly due to how big of a disrutor it would and will become in man yindustires. Some of more obiously than others. Graphic designers are scrambling and many of the creative indsutrties are on the backburner. But the more technical driven one’s aren’t fairing much better. Coding - AI can do that. Data analysis - AI can do that. And of course - Digital Marketing and combination of creative and technical. AI can do that.
It was clear that if AI wasn’t going to completly take my job eventually it was at least going to change the game entirely for me and my business. Within the specturm of digital marketing i have specialised in SEO (search engine otpimnsiation) and with AI overtaking and changing the way people search on the web, what my job looks like today, will ultimately change in the future.
Sure, i can adapt, learn and maybe my job will still be around the in next 5 to 10 years. But fuck that. You no what’s more risky than that? Not considering a career change. No considering my options and what i want to spend the rest of my life doing. That’s really why this blog exists.
It’s been a while since i’ve enjoyed what digital marketing has to offer me. It’s stressful, full of egoticial dickheads and honestly full of scammers and bullshiters who promise the world and never deliver.
So it’s time for a change. In the latter half of 2023 I found myself getting hooked on a new genre of video that I had once briefly expored years prior - watch repair. There’s something increadbily calming, and relaxing watching proffessionals and hobbiests make something look easy and explain it with such passion and enthusiam - it’s something i personally would love to have.
This is what led me to watch making and repair. This is what led me to maybe just maybe think is this something i could do? Is it within the relms of possiblity. Only time would tell.
